Online Schools: Massachusetts

As home to the original English settlers, the Pilgrims, Massachusetts has always been a hotbed of important historical United States moments. The Boston Tea Party, the earliest rebellion against the English, and other pre-Revolution moments took place within the state. Massachusetts was the first state to declare universal rights of all men, the basis of the U.S. constitution. Much of the Industrial Revolution began in the state, with manufacturing factories popping up in the larger cities in the 19th century. Massachusetts has been home to progressive thought and action from the very beginning, which is very much reflected today in the state’s educational system.

In 1647, the Massachusetts Education Law required that every county have a teacher or school. The country’s first public school, high school, boarding school, college, and women’s college are all in Massachusetts. Today, the state houses over 120 colleges and universities of all types. As an advanced educational state, online schools in Massachusetts are frequently found as part of older, more established colleges. The University of Massachusetts (or UMass) is one such school with a comprehensive online program. Over 100 degree and certificate programs are available, including subjects like biological sciences, criminal justice, engineering, liberal arts, journalism, and public health. UMass allows online students to apply for the same financial aid that on-campus students receive, which includes hundreds of grants, scholarships, and loan options.

Each of Massachusetts’s online schools can be accessed through Massachusetts Colleges Online, a state-funded, official database of all the online degree programs available in the state. Students can take courses at multiple colleges with little hassle. MassOne is another government funded online education resource for students, teachers, administrators, and other educational staff. The site is an inclusive source for financial aid, information, and learning resources for grade school students.

Massachusetts Virtual Academy is the state’s only public online school for students between kindergarten and 8th grade. Currently, they are not offering distance learning courses to high school students. The curriculum is not completely online, instead having part of the lessons conducted through printed material and textbooks. While the program is presently small, new legislation is looking to expand the program to encompass high schools students, as well as to offer more courses. If the bill passes, middle and high schools will partner up with the online program so that students can take free courses that are not offered on campus.
