Transportation Safety for Children

Many children are unaware of the importance of road safety and it can be dangerous when they are taking a bus, biking, or walking on the street without parental supervision. It is the parents' responsibility to ensure that their children observe safety rules when they are traveling on the road by themselves. By following safety rules, the chances of accidents occurring will be greatly reduced.

Safety Before and After Riding the Bus

The school bus is one of the safest ways to send children to school, but accidents can happen when they are boarding or leaving the bus. Parents should remind their children that they should stay further away from the road when they are waiting for the bus and that they should not talk to strangers. When the bus arrives, they have to wait for the bus driver to give them a signal before they board the bus. Then, they must line up and get on the bus one by one. When they are getting off, they should make sure that no cars or other vehicles are passing on the side of the bus. After they have exited the bus, they should move further from the road immediately. Parents can also make arrangements with school guardians to help their children get down from the bus safely.

Traffic Signals

Obeying traffic signals is an important part of road safety. Teach children the meanings of traffic light colors as well as basic road signs and vehicle signals. If they are taking the bus, they should learn about emergency exits and stop signs, as well as how to read flashing lights and mirrors. Explain to them the function of the crossing control arm and let them know that they should not walk in front of the bus.

Bike Safety

There are also a number of safety precautions that can be taken to prevent accidents while bicycling. Children should wear bright clothes and safety helmets before they go biking on the road so that they will be more visible to motorists and will not sustain head injuries if an accident occurs. They must be reminded that they have to refrain from playing in the road and that they should not ride their bikes on busy streets or during night time. Advise them to follow the direction of traffic and be extra careful when approaching intersections. Road signs should also be obeyed at all times.

Safety for Pedestrians

Parents should make sure that their children take the safest route if they are walking to school or another destination. It is a good idea to walk them to school the first few days so they will know which route to take. They have to make sure that no vehicles are approaching when they are crossing the road and they should keep their eyes on approaching vehicles until they have crossed the road safely. Also, they have to stop at all intersections and obey all traffic signals. Warn them against playing in the middle of the road.

It is very important for parents to practice road safety when they are traveling with their children so they can set a good example for their little ones to follow. Try to explain the benefits of road safety to children, so that they will not take it as an obligation.
