Subtraction is the difference between two numbers. It is the inverse of addition and symbolized by the (-) sign. So you can read 5 – 1 and simply the addition of 5 + (-1). Unlike addition, subtraction is neither commutative nor associative, so order of the numbers affects the outcome.
