American Civil War
The American Civil War occurred between 1861-1865 and was a period of intense warfare between the northern and southern states over the expansion of slavery. Eleven southern slave states seceded from the government and declared war upon the north. In 1865 the Confederacy (southern states) surrendered to the Union (northern states). After the north won, slavery was soon abolished and the reconstruction era began, significantly changing the socio-political landscape of the USA.
