One cannot enter the world of lolcats without learning, to some extent, a new language. Though many captioned pictures of cats (the most basic form of lolcats) are available online, and seem spontaneous, the form of entertainment has a long history, and has given rise and application to many words: caturday, lolrus, nom, and meme.
